Final Remarks
Asthma is a complex phenomenon. Identifying and then avoiding the factors that bring on an asthma attack are the first steps to better health. Air pollution, cigarette smoke, aerosol sprays, perfumes, powders, fragrant cleaning materials, paint, solvents, glues and adhesives may aggravate allergies and asthma.
But there are also paradoxes... Research suggests that people living in crowded and often polluted countries suffer more respiratory problems and other infections, but not asthma. Others believe that childhood infections may protect against asthma.
In the past, some studies have suggested that intake of antioxidants (vitamins C, E, and A, selenium) may benefit asthmatic patients. However, recent controlled trials have failed to verify these results. Fish oil which is rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, may be of benefit to some patients.
Clearly, more scientific research will further expand our knowledge regarding asthma.
