Classification of Alternative Medicine
Alternative Medicine can be classified into five (5) general groups:
Each group has a number of subsections. Click on the links to find out about each of them in turn.
1. Alternative medical therapies
2. Biologically based therapies
3. Mind-body therapies
At its core is the belief that mental and emotional factors can shape physical health, consequently, behavioural, psychological, spiritual and social methods are being used to maintain health and to prevent and cure illness. Mind-body therapies are also used in conventional treatment of common diseases such as high blood pressure, headaches, difficulty sleeping and incontinence (loss of urinary control). The risk of mind-body therapies are very low.
4. Body-based therapies
Body-based therapies use manipulation of the body to heal various conditions.
5. Energy therapies
Energy therapies work within the core belief that energy fields reside in and around the body (biofields) that are part of an universal life force. Therapists may also use external energy sources, such as electromagnetic fields, to support healing and influence health. Often, practitioners use their own hands to positively affect the energy field of the patient.
